Fox axes 'Buffy' musical events
Lawyers for Hollywood's 20th Century Fox have ended a sing-along screening tour of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" musical "Once More with Feeling."
"Once More with Feeling" was an episode of the iconic vampire show which aired on the WB, then UPN.
Fans have flocked to public screenings of the musical episode, even dressing up as their favorite characters, for the past year.
However, lawyers for Fox, which owns the rights to the former show, has canceled all future screenings, E! Online has reported.
"Notice for this was very sudden and unexpected, and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience it will cause," event founder Clinton McClung announced on the Buffy Musical Web site.
The key issue that appears to have led to the decision seems to be what residuals need to be paid when screening a TV show in a public theater.
20th Century Fox spokesman Chris Alexander said "significant payments" would be owed to the unions to compensate for the screenings.
"We have to protect our interests, and that's what we're doing," Alexander said. "There are plenty of legal ways for fans to enjoy Buffy but this particular event is not going to be possible at this time." // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
