La Scala Philharmonic to perform in NYC

La Scala Philharmonic will wrap up a North American tour with an Oct. 14 concert near ground zero in New York City, informs The Daily Mirror.

The concert will be held at the Winter Garden in the World Financial Center, La Scala Philharmonic spokesman Paolo Besana said Monday.

Milan Mayor Letizia Moratti proposed the concert during a visit to New York as a gesture of solidarity with the city, Besana said. New York City is continuing its post-Sept. 11 recovery work.

The program for the Winter Garden concert hasn't been decided, Besana said.

The Philharmonic's tour, which opens Oct. 6, will also include performances in Toronto; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Chicago; Champaign, Ill.; Philadelphia; and Washington.

The tour program, conducted by Riccardo Chailly, includes works by Wagner sung by tenor Ben Heppner, as well as pieces by Strauss and Ravel.
