Sir Paul McCartney has beaten off stiff competition from Sting to win the Album of the Year prize at the Classical Brit Awards, relates Reuters.

The former Beatle won the prestigious prize for his Ecce Cor Meum album, which he described as a "labour of love" that had taken a decade to make.

The album was inspired by his late wife Linda, who died of breast cancer in 1998.

Sting's lute album Songs From The Labyrinth was also nominated for the Album of the Year prize, which is voted for by classical music fans.
