Kelly Clarkson is suddenly in danger of driving right off the radio -- a stunning turn for an artist who, since winning the first American Idol in 2002, has become arguably the biggest pop star of the decade.
"Never Again," the first single from her My December CD, has made barely a ripple on radio compared with her previous hits, according to Orlando Sentinel.
The alarms were sounded when the album's driving first single, "Never Again," peaked at No. 9 on Billboard's top 100 singles chart and lingered in the top 20 for only a few weeks.
My December, which was released Tuesday, has been engulfed in rumors of trouble for months, starting with reports that Davis asked Clarkson to redo some songs or substitute new ones closer to the sound that made her a pop-radio fixture.
Clarkson replied that she likes My December as it is -- with its more-personal lyrics and more-rocking sound.
Music-industry veteran David Kahne, who produced My December, says Clarkson, who won the first season of American Idol, had no intention of soft-pedaling on her new material.
"She was completely clear about it," says Kahne, adding that Clarkson brought about 50 songs to their initial sessions. "She knew what it was supposed to be, and because she's such an emotional person, she doesn't know how to hide it."
