British pop singer George Michael has revealed he never told his mother he was gay.

The Sunday Times of London reported that the "Faith" singer only truly felt comfortable with expressing his sexuality in public after his mother died in 1987, one year before he exposed himself to an undercover police officer.

Michael said that after the loss of his mother, he felt free to express himself without risking her disapproval.

"There wasn’t any reason to be quiet now that my mother was no longer in this world," he said, "and I was proud of my sexuality."

Remarking about the highly-publicized way in which his sexuality became known to the world, Michael said it a challenging way to complete a personal goal he had for years.

"I had been trying to tell people in my own way for years and years," the former Wham artist said, "something in me picked the most difficult way to do it."  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
