The torso of Colombian pop star Shakira was blurred via computer pixellation when her concert aired recently on television in Afghanistan.
Still, privately owned Tolo TV is facing possible legal action by authorities who think her sexy performance and other Western-influenced programs Tolo airs are inappropriate for Afghan audiences, The Sunday Telegraph reported.
"Her clothes were very tight," observed Sharif, a 41-year-old Kabul doorman who caught the concert on TV. "Religious people say it is the West trying to impose their values, but I had no problem with it."
New legislation that increases the government's power to limit broadcasts deemed damaging to the country and its culture is soon expected to be signed into law, the newspaper said.
Although Afghanistan's media has expanded since 2001, when the Taliban government crumbled, several reporters have been murdered and incidents involving press intimidation and harassment have risen in the past year. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
